Up to that point most of the CO's who did the rounds fell into line with whatever their agenda was. Big Al just waltzed in and rode roughshod all over them.

  Scotsman: I don't remember Jim Simpson very much. He had a very distinct speaking voice though. John Flack was a superb speaker, he could make the driest crappies Watchtower pap ( i.e most of it) sound intelligent and interesting. I also remember whilst dredging this stuff out of memory of a DO by the name of Ketter in the mid 70's. I believe he came from the Midlands and was a heavy promoter of the old 1975 date and became very disillusioned when nowt happened. There was heresay that he was a Kiddie fiddler but I can't confirm this. Be curious to see how many other names you mention. Those last two Shanks and Oldrey are after my time. I was history by that point.

  You wouldn't be talking about Alistair Campbell at all? Used to bang on about being a missionary in South America and how if he could stand the privations of the jungle then we had no business moaning about banging a few suburban doors of a Sunday Afternoon.

  Really HUGE guy who when I came accross him was on Lanarkshire No. 1 circuit (Central Scotland about 1989/90. The thing is I actually had a lot of time for him. He came to my wedding with my wife's disfellowshipped sister was there after the local elders had made a huge thing about not coming as it would not be 'appropriate'. So old Campbell shows up and freeloads in helping himself to everything in sight. Thing is I didn't mind as it left egg all over the face of the bastard local elders.

  A few other UK CO's in the 70's and 80's if anyone knows them:

  Gordon Webb, Ray Midgeley, John Flack, Peter Morgan, Jim Simpson (DO I think) who were all in central Scotland at one point or other in the 70's and 80's.

  I always remember Webb giving a talk at the Convetion in Edinburgh mid 80's stating that it did not matter how Godly the parents were; if a child was not doing enough for 'hovah, then they could expect certain death anytime now. Jeez thanks for that Gordon!

  Glasgow here, don't post much but prompted when I saw this thread.

  Although lived in Northampton from 98 - 02, then I missed home so much I moved back. Raised in a shitehole called East Kilbride ( a new town) nr Glasgow. Back in the city itself though.

  Come on there must be more than TWO Scottish ex-J Dubs here.

  What Do You Think Is the Typical Attitude Of The Average JW Now?

  would the witness of 10 or 20 years ago, have the same way of thinking as today's jw's?

  I look at my parents now who have been banging on doors since 1974 telling people the end is coming 'real soon' and just think how tired and sad they look. I was told that I would not live in this system until 1980 and go to high school. Then 1981 came I was at high school and was told that there would be no need to look for a job as the system would well and truly be dead and gone before the 90's got here.

  Now where are we? I'm 33, got kids of my own, and in less than 5 years from now my oldest daughter will be going to high school.

  And so my parents are now running scared because as their 60's approach they have made no provision for their own future. Just the yearly grind of meetings, field service, assemblies on and on and on and on.... I just wonder if in their own minds the spark will eventually ignite and they will see that they have wasted their lives. To try to salvage their old age before they spend the next 20 years telling folks.. with a burnt out look in their eye... the end will be here any day now.

  I just feel so sad for these people who 30 years ago were bright eyed 20 something couples with young kids full of zeal for the 'imminent' end of the world who are now middle aged hollow versions of their former selves slaving away to no purpose for the Watchtower Cult.

  It's just so very very sad and such a waste of people's lives.

  I was just numb. I thought to myself: 'Is that it?'

  For me it was easier just to go with the flow. I weighed up getting baptized and going through the motions against rebelling against 'the truth' and all that would arise out of that in my family home. My parents had long told me that should I cause trouble in their 'theocratically run' home that they would have had no hesitation in throwing me out. Being practical I decided to go along with it until the circumstances arose that would allow me to get out.

  So I took the attitude; if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Of course I was a totally naive 17 year old who had no other life experience other than being raised in the JW's so I had no other frame of reference. My mother recently told me that I had the 'choice' whether or not to get baptized.

  for example, jehovah has arranged for 'the faithful and discreet slave' to care for the earthly kingdom interests.

  Indeed! How so! Why does trusting in the creator of the universe automatically equate to trusting in a man made earthy organisation? This is nothing other than a bare assertion by the writer of this article to get us off to a false start.

  "For example, Jehovah has arranged for 'the faithful and discreet slave' to care for the earthly Kingdom interests"

  Again a bare assertion. This is based on nothing other than a very loose interpretation of one passage of scripture which may or may not mean many things.

  "We do not try to go it alone"

  We? Who is this 'we'. Again by the use of the third person they tie every reader in with the writer so that they are left with no choice but to go along with the writer of the article.

  "for we trust Jehovah's arrangement"

  Arrangement? What arrangement? Now they claim by another assertion that this 'faithful slave' has an arrangement with the creator of the universe! Sounds very one sided this arrangement.

  :"Jehovah gives us sound counsel through his Word and through his organization, using the publications provided by the faithful and discreet slave"

  What self serving arrogance. 'and through his organisation' Sorry did I miss something? Where does this organisation come from? By just stringing this phrase on to the end of the sentence we are supposed without thinking to link the advice of a respected book thousands of years old with the inane twaddle printed by the Watchtower Society. This manufactured 'slave' now speaks on behalf of God by the means of a printshop in Brooklyn. I wonder what God has to say about this. Again at face value we are all to accept the arguement that god is using an or organisation to tell us all how to be holy through magazines and books.

  This is just a few things that stuck out a mile to me whilst reading that one paragraph critically and using my own head. Imagine the brain dead dubs at the Kingdom Hall studying this crap. Smiling placidly whilst the real meaning of what's being said goes right over their heads. The arguement that God (whether or not one accepts his existance) is using an earthly channel is a one sided arguement. There is no burden of proof on the claimant because the do nothing more than assert that they are God's channel.

  And yet people's very lives are affected daily by the outpourings of this 'slave'

  It is indeed a cult.

  i myself was raised in the "truth" til i was df'd at the age of 21. i have often wondered that if i were allowed to grow up just as every other child did in the u.s. would i have been interested in looking at the organization and taking interest?

  Having totally deprogrammed myself over the past 3 years, I am utterly astonished (particularly in this day with a world of information at our fingertips) how any rational adult who gets 'cold called' by the Watchtower can be taken in by the purile drivel spouted by the Watchtower Society. The very first thing anyone does before making a commitment of any magnitude is RESEARCH, taking into account all points of view. It is very obvious now that the Watchtower only makes converts of the downtrodden, depressed etc because anyone with half a brain will run a mile before becoming involved with this mindless pap and its legalistic rules.

  I continually stand amazed that people like my parents can day in, day out remain inside this cult and not see it for what it is. Especially in view of the heartache this evil religion has perpetrated on our family over the years.

  Would I be attracted to the Watchtower now as a grown man if I hadn't been brought up in it? Not on your life!!!

  well, i panicked, i prepared and had excuses ready.

  strategies and contingency plans up and running.

  i have been awaiting, nay willing my "inactive persons' shepherding call" (whatever) and it hasn't happened yet!.

  In response to some of the comments made;

  If the elders are absolutely determined to weed out those 'inactive' ones within their territory then the way I see it is that I have 2 choices.

  1/ Either I agree to meet them and engage in a game of mental gymnastics in order not to say something or display a rebellious attitude so that I may preserve my 'status quo' of being a fade away or

  2/ I simply refuse to entertain their power games and get on with my life.

  As stated before and echo'd by several other posters here they have absolutely no authority over my life. Even their terminology 'Disfellowshipped' 'Disassociated' etc are all terms which hold no meaning for me. How dare they assume to come back into my life after an absence of 11 years simply to get me to say YES/NO to a belief system that I hold in utter contempt.

  Unfortunately I realise that I have benefitted from the 'fade away' loophole but it was just a matter of time (especially with the proliferation of information on the internet) before they closed that loophole. But I accept that by standing my ground and not accepting their authority in my life means the likely loss of family.

  But my response to that: GO F*** YOURSELF WATCHTOWER. YOU MEAN NOTHING TO ME.

  I agree with minimus.

  To agree to meet with them or answer any of their questions is to acknowledge they have some power or hold over you. In the end they are going to do as they will anyway, because they have no respect for individual rights or family ties. So personally I don't see how to avoid the end result.

  Simply put I will not give them the satisfaction of even aknowledging them. I have been out for over 11 years by managing to fade away. I couldn't care less what they think of or label me as.

  Of course I run the risk of my parents cutting of contact, something they have thus far not done, although they are in no doubt what I think of their pathetic cult, but I am not prepared to even meet half way when their religion of choice is a man made cult. The loss of their grandchildren will be entireley THEIR fault caused by THEIR descision to choose the Watchtower cult over their own flesh and blood.

  So let them come hunting for us fade-aways! To hell with them!!
